I don’t think you can assume anything necessarily. Given that Zaladane originally came from another series, and the notion that she might be related to Polaris was very much a latter day notion thrown out by Chris Claremont after the characters had both been around for decades, and never entirely followed up on, I think the simplest solution at this point is that she was lying.
She claimed that she’s the “sister” of Lorna Dane, but her early history
remained unrevealed till her death. Zaladane, also known as Zala Dane, is the Queen of the Sun People of the Savage land (?), half “sister” of the mutant Polaris (?), “daughter’ of Magneto (?). Honestly though, this makes no sense. I believe she was lying and glad she was forgotten. She was a plot device and nothing more.
The whole thing was only to create useless story. Marvel never liked the idea. Even when Chris Claremont was in the middle of writing about the Shadow King (who Storm love so much LOL) using Polaris, Marvel immediately took Chris out and Fabian Nicieza took over in issue UXM 280.
His idea for what he wanted to do with Polaris has never been explored. He wanted to change her once again and Marvel says “Hell no you’ve done enough” and gave the continuation to Fabian.
